Sad News: Veteran Bollywood Star Manoj Kumar Dies in Mumbai at 87

Manoj Kumar, the legend who died at the age of 87 in Mumbai. The actor did innumerable patriotic films like Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti and got himself admitted to the Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital, where he died this Friday at 3:30 a.m. It was due to a heart failure problem, and this medical certificate issued by the hospital also mentions “decompensated liver cirrhosis” as the cause.

News on such a departure of “the legendary actor and filmmaker” was shared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). Sharing two photographs with the veteran actor,

PM Modi posted, “He was an icon of Indian cinema who was remembered particularly for his patriotic zeal and indeed reflected that in his films. Manoj Ji’s works have ignited a spirit of national pride and will inspire many more generations to come. My condolences to his family and numerous fans over this moment of grief. Om Shanti.”

According to his son, Kunal Goswami, Manoj Kumar had been suffering from a medical ailment for quite some time. It is by God’s grace that he left this world peacefully. His last rites have been arranged for tomorrow morning. “He was a happy man. Just feeling a little poorly. According to his son Kunal Goswami’s statement to the news agency ANI, Mr. Kumar had health problems for quite some time. Mr. Kumar’s funeral will take place tomorrow morning.

Manoj Kumar was born in 1937 as Harikrishnan Goswami in Abbottabad, a small town in the North-West Frontier Province of British India (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan).

Manoj Kumar’s Life Achievements

He made his Bollywood debut with the film called Fashion in the year 1957. He further went on to star in the first Kanch Ki Gudiya (1961) with Sayeeda Khan – which became a big break for him.

He managed to give us a thriller, Gumnaam (1965), which became a box-office success in that year and earned Rs 2.6 crores. Similarly, Mr. Kumar was a part of Shaheed, which was released that year, that looks at the life of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. He was addressed as Bharat Kumar due to his patriotic movies Upkaar (1967), Purab Aur Pachhim (1970), and Kranti (1981). He also directed and acted in the movie Shor (1972).

  • In 1992, he received the Padma Shri; in 1999, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award; and in 2015, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
  • Before the multi-party elections to the Pakistan National Assembly in 2004, Manoj Kumar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on an individual basis.
