Witness accounts say that the action of vandalism and burning of cars was soon heated up with emotions. Videos of the occurrences were splashed on social media. Tear gas shells and lathi-charge were soon used to disperse rioting crowds in Chitnis Park, Mahal, and surrounding areas of central Nagpur.

The disturbances broke out after VHP activists held a protest at 8.30 p.m. in Mahal, in front of the Shivaji Maharaj statue, demanding removal of the Mughal emperor’s tomb and burning of his effigy. After a couple of hours, Muslim groups reportedly said that the activists of Hindu parties, including VHP and Bajrang Dal, set on fire a holy book and cloth with the Islamic prayer known as the “kalma” during the protests.
